Hi folks, I am the new kid on the block. I previously used Olympus, but have been convinced enough by the quality reports to change to Ricoh and have purchased an R8. I intend to learn the camera and have studied the postings on this forum with great interest as I wish to depart from "point and shoot" . I love to photograph sunsets, good architecture, flowers and plants. The R8 seemed an economical purchase in relation its build quality and features, when comparing with other cameras.
My question is about Firmware. I am waiting to receive my camera out here (Murcia Spain) next month. I see from this forum that there are some firmware updates. I cannot find them on any Ricoh site apart from one on the Ricoh website on the list under R8. I cannot open this file and have downloaded it to my PC. It just looks like a blank document file called R8. It was dated 15/11/2008 on the Ricoh support site list under digital cameras.
Can someone please walk me through the process of locating, and installing any new firmware.
I do not know which firmware version I will have on the new camera.
Thanking all in advance for reading this and to those whose postings I have enjoyed and benefitted from.

Hi Benjibay and welcome here! Hope to see some your photos soon! ;)

The latest firmware for R8 can be found here:
http://www.ricoh.com/r_dc/download/firmware/r8/

And here you can learn how to check the actually installed FW and how to update it with the latest version.
http://www.ricoh.com/r_dc/download/firm ... wup_en.pdf

If you are using Windows based computer, you need to download exe file. Then you simply unpack it somewhere. And finally, upload the unpacked zlaunch3 and zlaunch7 files onto a SD card (either via card reader or usb cable connected to the camera). Then run the update procedure as described in above mentioned PDF file.

Great, thanks for your time Odklizec, I will download these files in anticipation of receiving the camera and report progress ( as a cover to pose further questions)! Benjibay1
