Everyone here says I should use RAW, so I made a start. On the Ricoh CD-rom is the program "Irodio" so I installed it.

Most functions seem logical, but the parameters on the "sharpness" screen are different to what I'm used to in Photoshop. What are "smooth" parameters and where is the threshold? :?

Most fun is the possibility to enhance overexposed parts, in JPEG there is simply no way to do that. Another advantage: noise reduction can be set to zero. :D

Because I know my way in Photoshop I should have the DNG plugin. It is not on the Ricoh CD-rom. Where can I find it?

HI Lucas, I'm afraid, I can't help you with PS, because I don't use it. And I found the Irodio less than useful. But maybe you can try the free version of Silkypix? The Silkypix UI may look strange on the first sight, but I'm sure you find it easy to use and logical after short time. And mainly, its like build for Ricoh cameras! I don't know, maybe it's because the Ricoh cameras are highly popular in Japan? And no, I'm not telling this because Silkypix is sponsoring our contests ;) I've used it before they started to sponsor the contests and I still love it for its features and output. Just give it a try. And if you need some help, don't hesitate to ask ;)

on a practical note, what if you have several hundred pics, like from a holiday, would you still shot in raw?

if so then would you do a batch conversion with silkypix or similar?

i have looked at the raw settings in PS2 and it seems there are a lot of settings that i am unsure of what to change, and to be honest most of the time i am happy with the jpg quality.

Just an opinion ;) . I only photograph in RAW owing mainly to harsh light conditions and the ability of RAW converters to manage this. I have taken as many as 2000 photos in eight days in RAW and do not batch process any of them as each photo seems to present a unique challenge. I use SilkyPix and think it is great - initally a bit strange, like all new software. I guess it is just a question of 'taste'. Also it depends on how much time you want to spend on processing - for me it is the closest that I will ever get to an ' artistic approach " to anything.

Hey Lucas!
Guess what, I am joining you in the exciting new world of raw/dng mode.
On Thursday I will be getting lightroom and will be starting to shoot in raw mode.
I loaded up the iridio software that was loaded with the gx200, but both here and in other places, people have panned that program.
I chose lightroom because it seems to have a lot of advanced photo editing features but also has a lot of great photo organizational abilities as well.
I will be doing a search of the forums here to find out more about camera settings for the gx200 while shooting in raw and other tips for processing photos.
If anyone has any tips or suggestions to offer, please feel free to send a message to me here directly.
Lucas, if you have discovered anything useful in regards to raw (since you have a bit of a head start for me) let me know.
Sorry for hijacking your thread a bit - just excited with getting the new software along with a new computer....
