Seems quite simple a construction though the size (small?), the bolting arrangement on a domed surface combined with the semi-circular seating arrangement for whatever attaches to it makes me realise that I really don´t have a clue! :roll:

What's common in your world Tim, is clearly a rare event in mine! Still stumped...each of the orifices must take an insert of some kind...presumably...or is it to do with laser measurement of some kind?

Not art, its use is scientific/educational
You are right about it being a light emitting ball, but there is a bit more to it.
